Rector

Graduate in Mathematics (1988) with Extraordinary Prize and 1st National Prize for Bachelor's Degree and Doctor in Mathematics (1990) with Extraordinary Doctorate Prize. Full professor of Statistics and Operations Research in the Department of Mathematics of UDC since 1999. In 1991 he began his academic activity at UDC, teaching, since then, in sixteen degrees in the Faculties of Computer Science, Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing and Podiatry, and Physiotherapy. He has published seven teaching books. He was president of European Courses in Advanced Statistics (ECAS) (2009-2014) and coordinator of the MODES research group until December 2024. He is a member of CITIC.

His research focuses on the fields of nonparametric inference, resampling methods, survival analysis, empirical likelihood, functional data analysis, big data statistical analysis, and statistical methods in epidemiology, genomics, neuroscience, weed science, oncology and credit risk. He is the author of more than 250 publications collected in Google Scholar. He supervised fifteen doctoral theses. He was editor or co-editor-in-chief of the journals Journal of Nonparametric Statistics (2019-2021), Computational Statistics (2016-2018) and TEST (2009-2012) and also associate editor of them and of Computational Statistics & Data Analysis.

He is an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute and was named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2022. He has been awarded the National Statistics Prize (2023), the Research Medal of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (2023), the SEIO Medal (Spanish Society for Statistics and Operations Research) (2022), with the BBVA Foundation – SEIO Award for the best methodological contribution in Statistics (2021) and with the SEIO “Ramiro Melendreras” Award for young statisticians (1989). Until December 2023, he was coordinator of the International Symposia on Nonparametric Statistics (ISNPS) and president of the Expert Committee on "Mathematics against COVID-19" appointed by the Spanish Mathematics Committee (CEMat).

He has been an invited speaker at more than ten international conferences. He has given more than thirty invited lectures at universities and research centers around the world, including the London School of Economics, Université de Paris 6, the Weierstrass Institut in Berlin, and the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. He spent stays at the universities of Giessen, Bonn and Louvain-la-Neuve and was a guest professor on twenty occasions at research centers around the world.

He was vice-rector for Research and Transfer of the University of A Coruña (2012-2016), coordinator of Mathematics in the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP) of the Ministry of Science (2008-2011) and head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of A Coruña (2005-2008).

He has received positive evaluations for six five-year terms of teaching and six six-year terms of research (one of them related to transfer).
