Jose Cordova-Garcia

Jose Cordova-Garcia is an Associate Professor at ESPOL University with more than 5 years of experience in applying AI and analytics to address real-world sustainability challenges.

He joined ESPOL in 2018 after completing his PhD at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His research covers machine learning (ML) applications in energy, agriculture, and weather monitoring with a focus on data standardization and availability. He led the deployment of a data collection and analytics platform for monitoring and energy consumption of 80+ buildings, and also platforms for creating ML-ready datasets of physical variables, e.g. weather stations. These efforts facilitate machine learning-ready datasets based on large scale as well as hyper local data collection, for applications like risk assessment.

He is an experienced educator, having taught graduate and undergraduate courses including: Applied Machine Learning, Optimization Methods, and Smart Electricity Networks and Sustainable Energy Systems. He has been the program coordinator for the Data Science Masters Program since 2020, demonstrating his leadership and education administration skills.

His research has been sponsored by GEO, Microsoft, and recently by Google to support his efforts in promoting education and research in applied AI among non-computing students with a focus on sustainability.
